Several new pieces of news for you all.

First up a clarification or two.
One - the Double Springs in the last blog is located in Cookeville, TN not in Alabama. Vance is not gone or going to my knowledge.
Second - Just so you will know I don’t try to judge the faithfulness, the worthiness, the climate or “what happened” in any work I post on this page. Yes, I do have opinions but on this page I try to just give information. As I’ve said before it is like the want ads - it is your job to check something out before you “buy” or “apply”. Thanks for the large number who read this, who share their information with others and who tell others about this page.

Breckenridge, TX a church of about 250 in a small town is looking for a preacher.

The LuVergne congregation has hired Jim Morgan who had been working with the West Nashville Heights (now Charlotte Heights church).

The Collegeside church in Cookeville, TN is looking for a pulpit guy, a youth minister and college minister. For more info go to: www.collegeside.org The attendance at Collegeside runs around 600-700.

The Cary congregation in North Carolina is looking. I held a meeting there several years ago and enjoyed both the church and the area. www.carychurchofchrist.org The attendance at Cary runs about 350 and they are moving into a new addition soon.

The Scenic Hills Church of Christ is currently in search of a new Youth Minister. Kyle Rye who has served as the YM is taking the role of the Pulpit Minister. The youth program has 30 plus students in 6th-12th grade. To learn more go to their website where they can find a link to information about this position on our home page.

Finally the Charlotte Heights church in Nashville is looking for a full time youth minister. Salary is not etched in stone and they can provide a house and utilities. A married guy is preferred...but that would not keep us from hiring the right guy. Their attendance is around 275. They want to fill the position soon. Major Scoops coming your way

There’s a lot to report today:

Let’s start with what may be the major news of today. James Waugh scoops himself with the report that he is leaving the pulpit at Hillsboro to take the work at McDermott Road church in Plano, TX. James has been at Hillsboro for a number of years and his friendship has been a blessing to me personally. This is a pretty major scoop as, when I think of great preaching I have always thought of Hillsboro: J.P. Sanders, B.C. Goodpasture, Batsell Barrett Baxter, Mack Wayne Craign, Mark McInteer and Marlin Connelly have all filled that pulpit...enough said. The McDermott Road church is a church plant that is about 10 years old. Our friend Tim Pyles helped in planting that congregation. They now run about 800 a Sunday I think. Kyle Macon, the associate minister, tells me that the Owl Hollow church in Winchester, TN is looking and ask us to post it. He says: “This family oriented congregation of 140 members is seeking an outgoing, people-oriented, God fearing family man who has a love for God, His word, and reaching out to a lost and dying world. Team oriented mentality is a definitely a plus and a positive outlook on life and faith is a must. Congregation is centrally located between Nashville, Chattanooga, and Huntsville. Paul Spurlin gets the scoop that the - Atlas looking for a youth minister as the YM there is, we understand, moving to work with the church at Killen. There preacher is the one and only Van Vansandt and their website is http://atlaschurchofchrist.com/

The Shelby Avenue church in Nashville is looking for a preacher. Joey Dixon has been the preacher there. Call the office at (615) 227-3910;

And on the good news for us front, the Spring Hill congregation has employed Craig Evans to be their new preacher. Craig has been the YM in Calvert City, KY so I suppose they will be looking for someone to fill his role there. I’m happy for our friends and neighbors at Spring Hill in this decision.

• This vacancy was created when Kelly Campbell decided to accept the preaching responsibilities at Hendersonville

Willow Avenue Church of Christ is looking for an associate minister - Clarence Deloach is the preacher at Willow:
• About 450-500 in weekly attendance
• This vacancy was created when Mike Webb left Willow to preach for Double Springs

Scyamore Church of Christ is looking for a campus minister (Tennessee Tech University)
• Jason Hart is the preacher at Sycamore
• About 450 in weekly attendance

I’ve got more coming soon - real soon - but thought I’d go ahead and send you an update today:

The Bethel congregation in Joelton, TN is looking for a part-time teacher. He will be responsible for teaching two adult classes per week (Sunday morning and Wednesday night). He will not be considered an associate minister. He will have no other responsibilities related to his employment other than teaching the classes. This is a paid position. Naturally they expect the person to be able to teach! Prior ministerial experience is not required. They did include that “Candidates will not be summarily disqualified for not having a wife, children, masters degree or gray hair” (but they didn’t say anything to me about no hair :)). A couple of quick notes on churches that have hired:
The Bellwood church in Murfreesboro, TN has hired Tony Holt. And Hartsville Pike in Gallatin has hired Brian Jarrett. Congratulations to both of these churches and ministers.

Jeremy Houck, one of our lead scoopers from Alabama (also known as “the great state”) sends this info: The Waynesboro Church of Christ in Waynesboro, Mississippi (not Tennessee, you can breath again Mitchell) is seeking a man who has seen his children graduated from high school (now, that’s an interesting way to put it). They have a preacher’s house with 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 baths; about 1900 sq ft. They can afford to pay 42k to 45k in salary. Presently they do not have elders and about 15 men attend their business mtgs. The attendance has been higher but lately it runs 50+. Contact Doug Cook at dougcook@live.com for more details.

The Highway 9 congregation in Piedmont, Al. is in need of a preacher. Steve Hall is leaving to begin another work on January 15. The congregation has approximately 65 in attendance every Sunday and close to that on Sunday night and Wednesday night. They are a great group of faithful Christians. They do have a preachers house next to the building. They do not have elders but that could change. You can contact Steve @ preachersrhall@gmail.com.

It’s been a day of multiple phone calls and information so I’m later getting this out than I had planned. I also thought two or places were going to close yesterday but they did not, so there are still some places hanging on right now about to fill, which will mean others will open.

In addition I posted a few weeks ago and ended up losing that post so I’ll repost those today. The key to this blog being a help is information, so if you know of anything in any area you have not seen on here help the guys looking by posting it or letting me know at dale@edge.net. Thanks for all of your help.

I guess the big news of the weekend is that Hendersonville announced yesterday that they have hired Kelly Campbell as their new pulpit minister. Kelly has been in the Cookeville area for about 20 years. Of course this means that Jerrie Barber will wind up his work as interim there. You can learn more about his work at www.barberclippings.com. There is a lot of info there that could help churches in hiring. Or you can email him at jerrie@barberclippings.com.

Sort of related but not directly Fairview in Williamson country has hired Bradley Tate. He is moving to Tennessee from Houston, TX. How’s that related to Hendersonville you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. Jerrie Barber co-works with John Parker in this interim work and Brother Parker has been the interim at Fairview. So, John will also be available to do a new interim work. The New Lasea church near Columbia, TN is now looking for a preacher. Their preacher of the last several years is retiring. They run about 150 or so on Sundays. That’s all I know about that one.

too long, too long

Every once in a while the last 30 years I’ve contemplated deeply my faith with doubt. I suppose I’m surprised it hasn’t happened more often, but when it comes in it is a virtual tsunami of doubt.

I’ve had serious thoughts of what if. What if we do not go to sleep this side of eternity and wake on the other - what if this life is all there is? What if?

Today it came at Starbucks, I’d done my run, made a visit, enjoyed a lunch with family and extended family, was enjoying a chapter by my favorite author, a song by my favorite group (Bare Naked Ladies) hummed through my earbuds when that old haunt ran through my heart. What if? What if I am just programed how I am, what if my preaching is just because of heritage, what if I only have believed what was handed to me, drank the cool-aid and this is all there is? What if?

I like to push such thoughts out of my mind, not even entertain them, but sometimes they come with such force I am stunned.

What would it take for me to become an atheist?

It would take denying my heritage, it would take loosing my closest friends, it would take most of my waking thoughts, it would take the decision to change my belief...it would not take loosing faith. No, it’d take an altogether different kind of faith. And it doesn’t measure up. It just doesn’t. I can question God and faith and hope but when I allow my mind to “change teams” even for a few minutes it only adds to my despair. If there is no God - then there is nothing. If there is nothing where did it all come from? If there is no faith then what is there to live for but a certain fearful nothingness and meaninglessness.

Two verses rush to my mind (for I believe Psalm 119:11) that give me strength:
- 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

- And the other one is often overlooked but is a boulder in my belief mountain, 1 Corinthians 15:6 “After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.” It’s not shocking that the apostles remained loyal and James (His half-brother) but 500 people, if untrue the skeptics would have disproven it with the defectors and found liars among this group.
